While almost everyone have heard about Odin, Thor and Freyja etc. there are quite a few Old Norse gods and goddesses we know very little about.
There are a few that there just aren’t that many stories about, like the sun goddess Sól and the moon god Máni for example, but we know much of their stories.
On the other hand, there are a few gods we basically know nothing about, but there are so many mentions etc. that it seems that they were quite well known back then. Maybe the best example of this is Thor’s brother Meili.
Meili is mention many times, both in Poetic Edda poems, and in Skaldskaparmál, yet all the mentions are in reference to Thor being his brother. We can only assume that he was also a son of Odin, and maybe, since Thor only ever mentions him as his brother, they possibly also shared the same mother, Jörd (the Earth personified).
It’s a sad fact that we have lost much knowledge in the past eight or nine hundred years. Furthermore, the Christians saw fit to burn all heathen books they found for a couple of hundred years, not really helping with our current access to old sources.
This leaves us in a position where much has to ne inferred, and while some speculations to seem to be a bit ‘out there’, I would love to hear your thoughts on other lesser known gods and goddesses!
