First Steps – Vikings In Retro Games (1980s – 1990s)

Vikings in the 3D Era (2000s)

Three-dimensional graphics allowed developers to introduce intricate designs to their characters. Characters seen as caricatures before were now being considered as serious heroes.

Rune (2000) was the first to pioneer this genre. The main character, Ragnar, goes through a blood-laden journey with mythical monsters and gods. His journey to the mystical world of Odin and Ragnarök depicts what very few Viking stories do, depicting them as more than just soldiers. The dark, mythical, and gritty vibe of the game made it extremely unique in the fantasy genre.

The Modern Stage: From Realism to Epic (2010s–Today)

The latest games have done away with just capturing the physical aspect of the age and have, instead, invented a mental age as well. The shift to new genre game engines have resulted in the creation of hyper realistic character designs, while the narratives have shifted towards focusing on the characters’ psyche.

In 2011, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim clearly exhibited some Scandinavian influences within its world–the frozen setting, draugr buried within ancient tombs and rune symbols, and a death-worshiping cult. While not officially termed as a Viking, the peoples’ culture and traditions featured within the game are clearly Nordic inspired.  

In 2020, ‘Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’ offered one of the most accurate representations of the Viking Age to date. Players delved into 9th-century England, participated in battles, constructed settlements, and even explored mythological regions like Asgard and Jotunheim. The game’s elements of history and mythology fused together in an artful manner, as the game provided a cultural bridge.  

God of War from 2018-2022 offered a new take on the Norse pantheon. Loki, Odin, and Thor were not presented as glorified heroes, but instead multi-dimensional characters with inner conflicts and depth. Mythology was conveyed through Kratos and Atreus as deeply human and tragic, as opposed to the crude, simplistic nature in which such stories are usually told.  

The new wave of these projects reflect a new level in the representation of Viking as well as Norse mythology characters, as psychological depth and complexity are now apparent.  

Cultural distortions and Stereotyping  

There is a level of advancement in narrative and technology, but many stereotypes still endure. The most recognizable example is the Viking horned helmet, which is the epitome of myth and folklore, as there is no evidence to suggest it ever existed. However, its prevalence within pop culture is undeniable, and as such, many games feel the need to feature it for the sake of recognition.

Portraying Vikings as nothing more than barbaric warriors is perhaps the most common stereotype surrounding them. The Vikings were also traders, sailors, and settlers besides warriors. The depiction of Vikings in modern games, such as Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, try to counter this stereotype by exploring the intricate interactions Vikings made with other cultures neighboring them.

In spite of the simplifications and outright distortions, they serve as a primer for tantalizing Northern culture. A good number of players seek Norse mythology books, an assortment of sagas, and other media after completing such games.

This indicates the fact that such games are not only for enjoyment, but also serve a pedagogical purpose. They serve as a bridge spanning a gap lying in the middle of modern perception and ancient myths, all in a lighthearted manner.
